If you have old ham radio materials there is now a fast track way to
donate them to a global library.  See the links below:
I have mailed them boxes of local SK's collections in the past and
normally it takes a few years before they get time and spare resources
to digitize such things.

I am working with them to get those out of their storage queue and
move them to the front of the line

Either reach out to me, or arrange to leave them at Tower Electronics and I'll get them from there.

Lighthouse Weekend Aug 5-7
The gate was open to us as we arrived at 8AM to the GB Yachting Club.  A 40 thru 6mtr OCF dipole was placed between the two Range Lights.      In case someone else would show up with a radio and wanted to join in, a 80 thru 6mtr OCF dipole was raised from atop  the South Light  and sloped toward the East.  There did not seem to be anyone on 40 or 20 meters.. switched over to the longer antenna, but was rejected on all bands by the radio. Took that antenna down and put up a different 80- 6mtr OCF dipole.. but had the same problem … went back to the 40+ antenna and began to make contacts.
While putting things away when we closed down, Wes found that the connector between the two coax cables was only connected on one side..
Of course, that was on me. But we made contacts and met a bunch of visitors as they came to view the Lights. Once again, Wayne Dunbar and the rest of the Light Keepers were very hospitable and big THANK You to them.
The OCF dipoles were checked again the next day because we planned on using them at the Kewaunee Pierhead Lighthouse  on the 7th.
Which we did…… Monday the 7th was a beautiful day.. Mike, W9MWP and I headed out to Kewaunee and upon arriving , met up with Heather, one of the Lighthouse Keepers. She went out and opened the Lighthouse while we took out  the items from the trailer to use for the event.  While walking out the 1,280 feet of pier, Jim, one of the other volunteers and the lead person that was contacted by Walt, KE9WTT to arrange to operate from this Lighthouse, came up by bicycle.  The bike was the way to go if you were making a number of trips to the site. He lent a hand and carried up some of our load.

The crew was very hospitable and helped us set up. The plan was to throw down a rope from the light, then tie on one end of the antenna, stretch it out and tie it to one on the ship tie on’s that are in the middle of the pier… so we had a  sloping to the West. Our desk was right at the front door… a super view..  After a few contacts on 14.263, one check in told us that a net would be starting on .262, so we QSY’d and did not take long for Mike to start drawing them in.  You can see the video at the Friends of the Kewaunee Pierhead Lighthouse web site, or the club Facebook page.

It was a fun time with all the visitors that came in and the interaction with the volunteers… Did I forget to mention the beautiful day, The breeze off the lake, the quietness, and the low humidity (which was envied by the Southern states we talked to.. )

How about the “Digirig” .. Want a link between the radio and your computer..? Want to spend less than $100 ?  Nice and smaller than the Signalink?   Not going to say any more about it…  look for it on line… the manufacturer has the lesser price (at least it was last week…)

Other items of interest:

On July 20th,  Gene AB9GK, and Dave N8KQS, went to the “Shack” at St. Norbert and checked the DX3000 and the peripheral equipment to see how the settings are for possible use as a Special Event station.  The Antenna Switch worked well as well as the SWR/Power meter. Had a learning curve for setting the power levels. There was a menu adjustment to keep the CW setting from coming on with the SSB mode… this had kept the power output setting from showing up on the front of the radio. Had to set the mic gain down a little… the microphone is quite sensitive..  The auto turner worked well on 20 and 40 meters.. (did not try any others – there is not a 75 meter coil on the antenna)

It looks as if the radio is set for phone operation … give it a try….

IF you have a item of interest such as a new piece of equipment, software, gadget, or power supply  that you want to let operators know about, send it to the editor of this newsletter. Then it will be shared to those on the list..

Radio Happenings (Short Version) July 9th

Pretty much put the schedule up in the Happenings last week. Just going to update this week's schedule of events as a reminder to those that will attend.. . It is a hodge podge of local items that may not pertain to some...

Monday Evening: Field Day recap (Hot Wash) meeting.
Tuesday all day UTC time... State ARES Winlink check in
Tuesday Morning ; Local (drill)  exercise
   Tuesday Evening: ARES meeting
Wednesday : Noon Siren Test Net **
Thursday (13th): ETO Winlink Thursday Training (UTC Time)
Thursday Evening: GB Mike & Key Club Meeting

   Attachments: Minutes of last meeting
                         Financial report for June
                         Siren Test Net List **
We have had more operators come off the HF bands because of restrictive rules in their "hood" .. What if a HF station was set up to operate remotely so they could be back on the air? If they could jointly put it together, the cost would be less prohibitive. There are other details that would need to be worked out.... huuumm ..

FIELD DAY JUNE 24 -25
A great start to Field Day. It was sunny, warm with a slight breeze.. The camaraderie began right away with breakfast. First the long table was filled, then the round table along side, then followed by filling two of the nearby booths.. The mood and sprit was super charged.

Leaving there, the normal route was blocked with a bridge repair but detours were easy to follow.
Everyone pitched in to assemble the site.. antennas were lifted up or rigged and connected with coax. There was one somewhat remote site with an RV and they were up in short time. A small camper was set up with solar & batteries using some vertical antenni.

It was decided to operate with a possible five stations plus a GOTA station.  The CW station was set up inside the shelter.
Everything was set and appeared ready at the 1PM start time. A couple of glitches at the EComm Trailer with high SWR because of a failed coax then the wire connection disconnected on the antenna.. Looking back, it gave a good lesson in trouble shooting but lost some transmitting time. (the antenna was checked before FD, but the problem must have exasperated when being set up.)
About 34 signed in including some curious from the neighborhood.
We are still adding up the points but need some pictures to validate the bonus points. (a separate email)
Total QSO Points – 906 with pwr factor.

The little rain shower did not bother any of the activity. The Potluck dinner was very good with a lot folks coming to partake and enjoy the evening together. The next morning the radios were still making contacts with a shift in the propagation.

The group closed down and began the put things away plus get the area cleaned up. Some of the members went to D2, right down the road for lunch before heading home.
The park amenities were top notch. I  think everyone would like to come there again in the future.
Thanks to a lot of folks.. those that came out to help set up, those that operated, those that logged, those that brought food for the dinner, those that helped close up, those that came to participate in any way.. A good Field Day overall. Will send out a final result when it comes together..

GBM&K HAMFEST
Not sure who was in charge of the weather committee for the Hamfest, but they sure deserve a big round of applause.. Even on the day before- while the crews were unloading Tower Electronics and Wolf River Coil into the hall, the weather was good… hot, but good..
This year, the event was co-chaired by Dave, KD9HJJ and Todd, W9GRB.. Our liaison to the facility was Randy, W9HAM..
The outdoor tailgate sale area was filled and had a lot of good comments. Talking about  that area, thanks goes out to Mike, W9MWP for setting up the announcement speakers outside.
It seemed as if we would never run out of door prizes and congrats to those  that won the bucket prizes with those nice batteries.. Thanks  to all the vendors that contributed to the prizes.
Of course, this would not have been such a success without all our volunteers… in the food area, the ticket sales, the parking lot, the bucket prize area, the announcers and those that were the “all-around-doing-what-ever-is-needed” people…

OK.. looking forward to Field Day, how about you?? June 24-25
Four Seasons Park in Hobart.
Be sure to see the ARRL QST or  their website to get all  the information on Field Day..  the rules, the what to bring check off list, and if you are bringing a laptop for logging and are using the N3FJP software, be sure to update  the program.. if you are already a subscriber, the update is free..  Check out the rig control on their logging program, it will do some fill in to save some  time…

It really gets dark out there when the sun goes down so be sure to bring a light of some kind to see your way around and to see your radio and logging.. Hope you can stop by and operate at least for a while. We will be there all night unless we get flashes in the sky.    Share a radio.
We will be posting some schedule for that  event.…Pre -event Saturday breakfast at Bay Family restaurant 8:30ish… going to the park 10AM… setting up stations… linking the logging laptops..

Potluck dinner on Saturday evening ..Cooking at 5:30 dinner at 6ish Some Brats and hot dogs will be furnished but you can bring your own meat to cook if you wish - and some liquid refreshment, Please bring a food item to share..

A lot of this information will most likely be discussed at the meeting this Thursday.

If you are planning on coming to Field Day to operate and/or the Saturday Potluck… let Wes, W9WES w9wes.michael@gmail.com or Gene, AB9GK garad50@aol.com know your intent.. Thanks

RADIO STUFF
Shack:
The HF system is operable. Please be sure all switches are in the proper position before keying up. Remember that the HF antenna
does not have 80meters capability..  Phase two will have the antennas, coax grounded and have arrestors installed .. (unknown date at this time, but soon)  The VHF/UHF radio had the antenna switch and dummy load installed as well but the antenna is NOT hooked up to the switch because it is attached to the D Star repeater. You can familiarize yourself with the radios by using the dummy load.

 VE TESTING
The VE group held a testing session during the Hamfest at Our Savior Lutheran School. I may not have heard the whole result, but it seems as if K9EDD’s grandson made Tech, and Luke, W9LON achieved the General Class.. and I believe someone took the Extra and passed.. Congratulations to all that took the tests.. Even though they may not have passed they showed the willingness to try.. .. If I missed someone, I will try to get it recognized in the next newsletter..

**Because the month began on a Thursday, the siren test net will be next week.. but if you are out and about any Wednesday and observe a siren let us know so we can mark it down and pass the info to the Emergency Management .

Radio Happenings May 24, 2023..

  SCHEDULE OF EVENTS:
 JUNE 3RDGB M&K Hamfest
 JUNE 8TH  – GB M&K Club Meeting
 JUNE 10TH – Burlington Freefest
JUNE 14TH – Siren Test Net
JUNE 17TH – Sunshine Swap Fest, Neenah

THE BIG ONE !!

Yes, the Hamfest is just around the corner. Getting excited? You bet!
Eight Club members just returned from the Hamvention in Xenia, Ohio(used to be in Dayton) My second time but I saw a lot more this visit. It is also a learning event. As we walked and talked to the vendors like Icom, Yeasu, Kenwood, etc we learned more of what they had. But was also interesting were the ones that had the accessories, like the ammo box radio setups,  the batteries, the various antennas, software, there seemed to be more miniature digital meters for those that are updating their “shacks”.
I had the great experience of working in the Tower Electronics booth. Met fellow Hams from all over.. Greece, Italy, U.K., Brazil, etc, and from Washington state to New Jersey, Florida, Texas.  Most said they always come to this particular booth, because they had some of the best adaptors for their set ups. Finding the antenna adaptors for the HTs seemed to be my most sales.  Surprising how many have been to Lambeau Field
It is still not too late to reserve your table or Trunk Sales spot for the GBM&K Fest Or volunteer to help out.. contact the Co Chairs..  Sign up –Todd W9GRB- toddclausen@yahoo.com or Dave KD9HJJ  dziesmer@wi.rr.com

LOTS OF ANTENNAS .LIC- PORQPNE

Just a plug for their Swap Meet on Sept. 16th 10am to 3pm, in Belpre, Ohio. They are having free food, free admission and there will be a car show on the same grounds with free entertainment.  Door Prize is a  Yeasu  891 HF rig.  We are swaping our Hamfest notice with theirs…  But the updated flyer for ours will be attached to this and they will be sending it out to their operators.

(unknown date at this time, but soon)  The VHF/UHF radio had the antenna switch and dummy load installed as well but the antenna is NOT hooked up to the switch because it is attached to the D Star repeater. You can familiarize yourself with the radios by using the dummy load.

                         &&&&  Field Day  &&&&

Another meeting of the Field Day committee is taking place on Monday(today)

It is good to check things out prior to an event. The antennas were over at N8KQS’s house to be checked out.. Raised the first one in the air and it was over the top of the house.. The Comet analyzer showed bad on all bands..  then all the other antennas did also… The antennas were brought to a different location (KA9BXG) and they checked good.

Remembered the same thing  happened when checking the antenna at St. Norbert. The Comet folks said the analyzer was getting unwanted rf from the cell tower equipment on the roof. Nothing wrong with the antenna..

At the house, since the antennas were built, new security cameras were installed .. wireless.. stray rf..

OK.. looking forward to Field Day, how about you?? June 24-25

RADIO STUFF…

Ever wonder if there are any Ham radio operators that may have moved in near you?  There is a map you can bring up with that information… Usually you can see an antenna tower poke out of the trees or on top of a roof.. But there may be a Tech with a HT right now while working on their General level.  Or you may be looking for an Elmer that lives near by..

https://haminfo.tetranz.com/map

I just put my grid square (EN64al) in the box and got a pile of information … I even saw that some have moved and must not have sent in a change of address to the FCC yet.. Don’t know your grid square? It should be on your license or go to QRZ Grid Mapper.. Good to know that grid for logging purposes or other things like Winlink and APRS.

Shack

The Shack committee will be tieing in a grounding system on the 8th in the afternoon.. this will ground all our equipment in the room. This project will also put in antenna switches with arrestors and dummy loads. Phase two will have the antennas, coax grounded and have arrestors installed .. (unknown date at this time, but soon)

Winlink P2P / or FLdigi

Ever think about sending printed message forms from one radio to another without a repeater? What if the repeaters are down and you want to contact another ham buddy and leave a message? Person to person messaging just like the old packet without the “mailbox” … perhaps a TechTalk in a month from now…

Now is the time that we can be busy using our radios to help out our communities. The requests are coming in for assistance to help provide tracking and notices for medical help. The various agencies such as the Muscular Distrophy, have walk/run events to bring attention to their needs and be a fund raiser.
We have been assisting with keeping a watch over the participants being in a van going along the route or at a water/break station. The event does not take long and it is in W.DePere. If you want to assist, contact Robert Duescher at ka9bxg@gmail.com

*** ADDRESS CHANGE***

Our Treasurer reported that the US Postal Service has sent their annual bill for our PO Box.. But the price has grown beyond what is felt to be reasonable $194 per year. This was presented to the membership at the last meeting. As most of the usable mail is payments for dues, the membership voted to change the official mail address to be the same as the Treasurer’s. You will see it on the Header of the Club letter. 3004 Quarry Park Dr #10, DePere, WI  54115

        ####   CLUB HAMFEST  ###

Be sure to check the K9EAM.ORG website for the flyer. This event is our big one! June 3rd which is not that far away anymore.  There is still a need for more help to make this the success like it was last year and perhaps a little better. We have heard that there may be more commercial vendors this year as well as Tower Electronics.

A lot of those that helped last year, were present at the meeting last Thursday and signed up again for this year. A lot of good comments came out.

Still need some signups for different areas including setting up on Friday afternoon/evening June 2nd and of course- taking down/clean up at the end. Sign up –Todd W9GRB toddclausen@yahoo.com or Dave KD9HJJ  dziesmer@wi.rr.com

&&&&  Field Day  &&&&
A meeting took place last Monday to begin to plan the activities and setup for Field day.

A new location for this. Four Seasons Park in Hobart. One way of getting there from the center of Green Bay, is to take West Mason Westward until you reach Overland Road. Then go North on Overland Road a few miles until you get to Four Seasons Drive on the left. Here are some pictures.

https://www.hobart-wi.org/4-seasons-gallery

The Club EComm Trailer will be there. It has a Kenwood TS-570 HF radio. There are three 80-6 OCF antennas, rope, coax, an expandable pole, some stub filters, a vhf/hf radio. The batteries are found as DOA but have a generator. The Club has purchased two laptops last year for logging. Logging is very important for this event (contest)

If you want to be sure you are going to be  able to operate something other than phone (voice), you may want to bring something you are familiar with. Having headphones to keep from interfering with others is important too.

The original purpose for Field Day, is in case of an emergency, to be able to set up your equipment to pass messages from an area that has been mostly destroyed from some event. This gives you a chance to see how portable you and your equipment are.

Times for gathering has not been defined yet.. usually we meet for breakfast…(this year because of location changes) we might be meeting at the Bay Family Restaurant. Then heading out from there.  We usually have a Pot Luck Dinner that evening.. more on that later.. the logging will be made easier with a long distance Mesh system so stations can be tied together..
