Test Net list is attached ..  11:45 Net Check In .. Please report siren rotation and sounding... 

  Field Day.. Starting with breakfast (if you choose) at Bay Family Restaurant (NOT Bay View) 8AM-ish. Then we head out to Four Seasons Park around 10AM ... Taking West Mason which is only a couple of blocks away from the restaurant .. head out to the West on Mason  ..  Watch carefully on the right for Overland Road...Then go right (North) for about three miles and watch for the sign for 4 Seasons Park on Four Seasons Road.... 

   But first,, If you are coming to the Breakfast, they need the number that are coming so the tables can be reserved ... the Red Hatters are in the back room so we cannot get that one...  Contact  Wes

   Pot luck dinner on Saturday evening at 6PM Please bring a dish to pass.... 

 To be sure to also let Wes know if you are planning to bring a radio during the event.. we will be there all night long unless there is lightning. 

    It should be a better year for propagation than last year... hope some Techs come out to operate as well. 

    If you have a laptop with logging software, it would not be a bad idea to bring it along..

GBM&K HAMFEST

  Not sure who was in charge of the weather committee for the Hamfest, but they sure deserve a big round of applause.. Even on the day before- while the crews were unloading Tower Electronics and Wolf River Coil into the hall, the weather was good… hot, but good.. 

   This year, the event was co-chaired by Dave, KD9HJJ and Todd, W9GRB.. Our liaison to the facility was Randy, W9HAM..

   The outdoor tailgate sale area was filled and had a lot of good comments. Talking about  that area, thanks goes out to Mike, W9MWP for setting up the announcement speakers outside. 

   It seemed as if we would never run out of door prizes and congrats to those  that won the bucket prizes with those nice batteries.. Thanks  to all the vendors that contributed to the prizes. 

   Of course, this would not have been such a success without all our volunteers… in the food area, the ticket sales, the parking lot, the bucket prize area, the announcers and those that were the “all-around-doing-what-ever-is-needed” people… 

OK.. looking forward to Field Day, how about you?? June 24-25

  Be sure to see the ARRL QST or  their website to get all  the information on Field Day..  the rules, the what to bring check off list, and if you are bringing a laptop for logging and are using the N3FJP software, be sure to update  the program.. if you are already a subscriber, the update is free..  Check out the rig control on their logging program, it will do some fill in to save some  time… 

 It really gets dark out there when the sun goes down so be sure to bring a light of some kind to see your way around and to see your radio and logging.. Hope you can stop by and operate at least for a while. We will be there all night unless we get flashes in the sky.    Share a radio. 

 We will be posting some schedule for that  event.…Pre -event Saturday breakfast at Bay Family restaurant 8:30ish… going to the park 10AM… setting up stations… linking the logging laptops..

Potluck dinner on Saturday evening ..Cooking at 5:30 dinner at 6ish Some Brats and hot dogs will be furnished but you can bring your own meat to cook if you wish - and some liquid refreshment, Please bring a food item to share..

 A lot of this information will most likely be discussed at the meeting this Thursday.

RADIO STUFF

Shack: 

The HF system is operable. Please be sure all switches are in the proper position before keying up. Remember that the HF antenna 

does not have 80meters capability..  Phase two will have the antennas, coax grounded and have arrestors installed .. (unknown date at this time, but soon)  The VHF/UHF radio had the antenna switch and dummy load installed as well but the antenna is NOT hooked up to the switch because it is attached to the D Star repeater. You can familiarize yourself with the radios by using the dummy load.

  

 VE TESTING

   The VE group held a testing session during the Hamfest at Our Savior Lutheran School. I may not have heard the whole result, but it seems as if K9EDD’s grandson made Tech, and Luke, W9LON achieved the General Class.. and I believe someone took the Extra and passed.. Congratulations to all that took the tests.. Even though they may not have passed they showed the willingness to try.. .. If I missed someone, I will try to get it recognized in the next newsletter.. 

**Because the month began on a Thursday, the siren test net will be next week.. but if you are out and about any Wednesday and observe a siren let us know so we can mark it down and pass the info to the Emergency Management .

THE BIG ONE !!   

       Yes, the Hamfest is just around the corner. Getting excited? You bet!

 Eight Club members just returned from the Hamvention in Xenia, Ohio(used to be in Dayton) My second time but I saw a lot more this visit. It is also a learning event. As we walked and talked to the vendors like Icom, Yeasu, Kenwood,etc we learned more of what they had. But was also interesting were the ones that had the accessories, like the ammo box radio setups,  the batteries, the various antennas, software, there seemed to be more miniature digital meters for those that are updating their “shacks”. 

       I had the great experience of working in the Tower Electronics booth. Met fellow Hams from all over.. Greece, Italy, U.K., Brazil, etc, and from Washington state to New Jersey, Florida, Texas.  Most said they always come to this particular booth, because they had some of the best adaptors for their set ups. Finding the antenna adaptors for the HTs seemed to be my most sales.  Surprising how many have been to Lambeau Field

Buffalo 3rd Annual Radio Swap Meet
       Just a plug for their Swap Meet on Sept. 16th 10am to 3pm, in Belpre, Ohio. They are having free food, free admission and there will be a car show on the same grounds with free entertainment.  Door Prize is a  Yeasu  891 HF rig.  We are swaping our Hamfest notice with theirs…  But the updated flyer for ours will be attached to this and they will be sending it out to their operators.

    Tech’s.. a great chance to operate on HF .. There will be a control operator that will help you operate..

RADIO STUFF

 Wanted - dual band 50+ watt mobile dual band 2M/70cm vhf/uhf transceiver. Prefer traditional name brand. Walt, KE9TT email: fdpiper-at-duck-dot-com 

Shack: 

      The Shack committee (Larry,K9IQ – Gene, AB9GK) tied in a grounding system - this will ground all our equipment in the room. Antenna switches with arrestors, dummy loads and a SWR/Power meter were also installed.

**Busy Times*

   “Thanks” goes out to Robert Duescher KA9BXG and crew for assisting with the communications for the MS Walk that took place April 23^rd. Great Community involvement. 

Brat Barn Fund Raiser.. May 7^th.
  After a little “snafu” with the scheduleing, ( last minute Festy change from East GB, to DePere and from Sunday to Saturday) Keith, KS9WI pulled it out with a good set of workers that were able to make a drizzling start -  turn into a possible record breaking profit. 
 Another Thank You goes out to those of you that came out, chated  and purchased brats and burgers..
NOTE: the original schedule for the brat barns has changed.. Stay tuned…

 Another meeting of the Field Day committee is taking place on Monday(today) 

 It is good to check things out prior to an event. The antennas were over at N8KQS’s house to be checked out.. Raised the first one in the air and it was over the top of the house.. The Comet analyzer showed bad on all bands..  then all the other antennas did also… The antennas were brought to a different location (KA9BXG) and they checked good.

   Remembered the same thing  happened when checking the antenna at St. Norbert. The Comet folks said the analyzer was getting unwanted rf from the cell tower equipment on the roof. Nothing wrong with the antenna..

  At the house, since the antennas were built, new security cameras were installed .. wireless.. stray rf..

Ever wonder if there are any Ham radio operators that may have moved in near you?  There is a map you can bring up with that information… Usually you can see an antenna tower poke out of the trees or on top of a roof.. But there may be a Tech with a HT right now while working on their General level.  Or you may be looking for an Elmer that lives near by..

I just put my grid square (EN64al) in the box and got a pile of information … I even saw that some have moved and must not have sent in a change of address to the FCC yet.. Don’t know your grid square? It should be on your license or go to QRZ Grid Mapper.. Good to know that grid for logging purposes or other things like Winlink and APRS.

Ever think about sending printed message forms from one radio to another without a repeater? What if the repeaters are down and you want to contact another ham buddy and leave a message? Person to person messaging just like the old packet without the “mailbox” … perhaps a TechTalk in a month from now…
